How to Dye Hair with Natural Remedies

Once upon a time women used only natural remedies to dye their hair, for example, henna, basma, chamomile or walnut, getting different colour tones. As it is known, natural dyes are not harmful, therefore, they are still the healthiest remedies for hair dyeing. Natural dyeing remedies do not damage hair and irritate scalp. In addition, these dyes are healthy – if they are used regularly, they improve hair growth, strengthen hair roots and prevent dandruff. With natural dyes hair obtain beautiful tone and lively sheen. Of course, these colours are not so resistant as chemical colours, but, if a procedure is repeated once in a 6 to 8 weeks, intensity of colour increases. It should be mentioned, that grey hair can be fully dyed with only chemical dyes.

If after usage of natural dyes you decide to use chemical dyes, you should take a brake of 2 to 3 weeks, otherwise the new colour will not stick to the hair. If your hair are dry and frangible or you have some scalp disease, it is recommended to use only natural remedies for hair dyeing. If you want hair of light tones, rinse them with decoction of chamomile, cinnamon, hops, turmeric or lemon. If you want hair of red or dark tones, rinse them with decoction of henna, sandalwood, cypress or walnut. While dyeing dark hair, you can also use red wine or decoction of chokeberries.

Here are some recipes of natural hair dyes:

  • Henna. Henna is mixture of dried leaves and barks of lawsonia inermis bush. Natural henna colors hair in red tones. Henna and basma dyes hair in light brown to black tones. Henna and karkade dyes hair in reddish tones. Henna and tea dyes hair in brown tones, but henna and coffee dyes hair in chestnut tones. Douse a mixture with boiling water and cool it to 80-90 degrees Celsius, keeping it in a water bath. When it is done, quickly apply it on hair, because henna is active while it is hot.
  • Chamomile. If you want to add some golden tone to your hair, use chamomile. Douse 200 grams of chamomile flowers with 1 litre on boiling water. After 30-40 minutes percolate a decoction and rinse your hair with it. You can also douse 125 grams of dry chamomile flowers with 300 millilitres of boiling water and leave it for 15 minutes. After that percolate a decoction, add juice of one lemon and 30 millilitres of vegetable oil, and mix it. Apply this mixture on your hair, leave it until it dries and then rinse it with warm water.
  • Rhubarb. Rhubarb adds light brown tone to light hair. Douse 400 grams of rhubarbs with 1 litre of white wine and boil it in a water bath. Heat it on low fire, until amount of mixtures decreases four times. Cool and percolate it, and then rinse your hair with it. You should know, that it is not recommended to use rhubarbs on very dry hair.
  • Onion peels. If you want to get a bright golden tone, douse 200 grams of onion peels with 1 litre of boiling water and boil it in a water bath for 15-20 minutes. Cool and percolate it, and then rinse your hair with it. If you want to get a reddish tone, douse 50 grams of onion peels with 1 glass of boiling water and boil it for 20 minutes. Leave it for a while, percolate it and rinse your hair with it.
  • Tea. For puce tone in light brown hair douse 3 tablespoons of tea with 1 glass of water, boil it for 20 minutes, leave it for a while, percolate it and rinse your hair with it. For chestnut tone in light brown hair douse 2 tablespoons of black tea with 2 glasses of boiling water, steam it under cover on low fire for 20-25 minutes and then percolate it. While decoction is warm, rinse your hair with it, cover your hair with polyethylene cap and terry towel. For chestnut tone leave it in your hair for 15-20 minutes, but if you want to get darker tone, leave it for 30-40 minutes and then rinse it with water. For copper tone douse 2-3 tablespoons of grained walnut leaves and 2 tablespoons of black tea with 1,5 litre of boiling water. Boil it on low fire for 20 minutes, leave it for a while, percolate it and apply it on your hair.
  • Natural coffee. For dark chestnut tone douse 4 full tablespoons of coffee with boiling water and boil it for 5 minutes. Cool it, add one packet of henna, mix it and apply it on hair, using brush. Then cover your hair with polyethylene cap and terry towel, and leave it for 20 minutes to 2 hours. Rinse your hair with acidified water (1 tablespoon of vinegar on 1 litre of water) or use conditioner.
  • Walnut. You can use leaves, barks or lobe walls of nut. Grain it, dissolve it in the water, until it becomes like porridge, apply it on hair, leave it for 20 minutes and then rinse your hair.
