How To Protect Your Hair Color From Sun

Everybody loves coloring their hair. However, you need to protect your hair color from the sun. It is a well-known fact that too much radiation from the sun can fade your hair color. I mean, we spend a lot of time getting that perfect shade or color, so we should do everything we can to make it last. Which is why we compiled a list of tips that you can use to keep your hair color radiant and bright all through summer.

Always use quality hair color

This is probably the most vital tip for maintaining your hair color. Ensure your stylist uses a quality hair color on your hair, preferably one with conditioning properties that would continue to condition your hair well after you colored it. Hair color with natural oils will help make your color resistant to sunlight and leave your hair looking shiny and healthy.

Use color protecting shampoo and conditioner

When shopping for a shampoo or conditioner, opt for products that are free of alcohol and ammonia. Doing this will prevent your hair from getting dry, or stripped of its color.

Use a UV protection spray

When going out in the sun, it is advisable to apply a UV protection spray to your hair. Ultraviolet rays are very harmful to your hair. And if you don’t protect your hair from them they will penetrate the cuticles of your hair and oxidize or bleach your hair color, making it fade faster. So by applying a UV protectant spray you will protect your hair from radiation effects of the sun, and will prolong your hair color.

Don’t chemically treat your hair

Avoid treating your hair chemically. If you are going to color your hair, don’t straighten it chemically. Doing this will affect your hair color and will make it fade that much faster.

Avoid red dyes

Red dyes are very prone to color loss under the sun because they have the largest molecules. It is tough for red hair dye to penetrate the hair due to its molecule size. Hence why red-colored hair color will fade quicker under the sun. So if you can, avoid dying your hair red.

Wear a hat

Wearing a hat is the easiest way to prevent your hair from losing its color. Just pop on a hat and enjoy the sun without worrying that your hair color will fade and look dull.

Avoid extremely hot water

When washing your hair, keep the water temperature at mildly warm. Extremely hot water will wash off the hair color. Therefore, if you love your hair color, avoid washing it with hot water.

Use deep-conditioning treatments

Using deep conditioning treatments will go a long way in protecting your hair color from sunlight and keeping it smooth and nice-looking. These type of treatments also restore protein and moisture in your hair, that is lost during the hair coloring process. For best results, use a deep-conditioning treatment a minimum of once a week. Add the treatment to your hair, comb through your hair (root to tip) and let the treatment sit in your hair for at least half an hour. Then rinse out your hair and your hair should be much shinier and softer than before the treatment.

Reduce how often you shampoo your color-treated hair

Reducing how often you wash your hair is another factor to consider if you want your hair color to last for a long time without fading. In order to preserve those natural oils that help condition your color-treated hair, you should shampoo three times a week at most. This will make sure that your color lasts much longer and will also help with maintaining healthy-looking hair.

Apply a hot oil treatment

Hot oil treatments not only help your color-treated hair retain their shine, but they also are very easy to do at home. Wash your hair, towel dries them and then apply the hot oil treatment to your mane. Cover your hair with either plastic wrap or shower cap, whatever is easier for you, and blast some heat on it using a blow dryer. Then once the oil in your hair has heated up, cool your hair back down to a room temperature and then rinse them in cold water. You should see improvements in the way your hair look and feel from the get-go.

Avoid exposure to rain

And lastly, also avoid exposing your hair to too much rain. Many don’t know that rainwater is slightly acidic and therefore can affect your hair color. But in case you do get caught up in the rain, wash your hair as soon as you get home. This will help you keep your hair color intact and looking good.
